12 Kilometers is a horror film directed by Mike Pecci. The footage and trailer rough cut was provided, but transitions, graphics, and the title end card needed to be designed.

The Challenge

The film is a throwback to 1980’s horror movies with a dark and creepy vibe. The design needed to fit 2K anamorphic footage. Additionally, the color grade was already set, so I had to work around those parameters while retaining the impact of the original colors.

The solution needed to unite 2K footage and a set color grade with transitions that reinforce the eeriness of the film.

Art Direction

  • After mind mapping and exploring a few different options, I focused on natural elements in their most basic states. This reinforced the terror of the unknown element making the miners sick.

  • Overlayed textures of rust, amorphous substances, and scientific macro shots were used for transitions. It not only gives a science-fiction feel, but also mimics the distorted, collapsed sense of reality that the miners experience when they get sick.

Twelve design boards carry the selected direction across footage and a full-screen end card.
