The spec brief called for a visual identity and broadcast graphics package for Expedition 100: Mission to Mars. Three moodboard and styleframe directions established distinct visual territories before one monochrome route was developed into six final 1920 × 1080 design boards.

The Challenge

The system needed to unite treated footage with full-screen titles, the show identity, tune-in information, and a NASA Television end card for an audience aged 25–65, skewing male. Mars is framed as a hostile, remote environment; human arrival creates the turn. “UNFORGIVING” holds the landscape and astronaut imagery in tension, while “UNTIL NOW” shifts the sequence toward the spacecraft, show reveal, and tune-in.

The desired tone was dangerous, awe-inspiring, and cinematic.

Art Direction

  • Stark grayscale treatment brings varied stock imagery into one visual register.

  • Fine grids, orbital diagrams, and targeting marks suggest mission plotting without overwhelming the footage.

  • Wide-tracked typography uses scale and negative space to create a controlled, cinematic pace.

  • Dust, grain, and scratches make the imagery feel exposed and physically hostile.

  • A high-key inversion on “UNTIL NOW” creates the sequence’s clearest visual and narrative break.

Solution

Six design boards carry the selected direction across environmental footage, astronaut and spacecraft imagery, full-screen titles, the show lockup, tune-in information, and the network end card. Repeated type, texture, and technical linework keep the system coherent while shifts in brightness and scale create progression.
